Description

davenport machine tool company was founded in 1894 by mr. william simeon davenport in new bedford, mass. initially producing clock pinion turning machines, the company progressed into the manufacture of intricate multiple spindle automatic bar machines. this move laid the groundwork for the thriving automatic machine product market that rochester enjoys today.
although credited with many inventions, mr. davenport is most widely recognized for the model b automatic screw machine that bears his name. the present machine is the result of decades of mechanical evolution from the first patented design in 1902. in mr. davenport’s own words, the development of a machine is a growth process. my first machine had about 350 parts. improvements and simplification added the other 1,500. a machine grows out of a crude infancy like a boy into manhood.

due to its overwhelming success in a multitude of industrial applications, the model b five-spindle automatic still represents davenport’s main product line. the model b is complemented by a complete line of more than fifty standard attachments and a wide selection of tool holders, all manufactured by davenport. the test of time has proven the "model b" to be the fastest, most versatile multiple spindle automatic bar machine ever produced.

presently there are more than 10,000 of these machines in various parts of the world producing a variety of everyday items such as eyeglass hinges, socket set screws, faucet valves and fasteners of every type and description. it hasn’t always been easy for davenport to satisfy the demands of its various and numerous customers. at one time there was a five-year waiting period for the delivery of a new "model b". davenport management responded to this condition with a thorough upgrading of machinery, thereby increasing production capability. the latest in computerized numerical control machining centers, along with an advanced computer system, new automatic production machinery and state-of-the-art inspection equipment all contribute to davenport’s quality production standards of today.

davenport also builds a 5 spindle servo controlled machine (servo b). this machine uses state of the art servo technology. it offers the speed of the model b with increased accuracy and is easier to set up and operate. for many applications, however, the model b continues to stand the test of time as the "world’s most productive machine".
